How do you make REALLY thick hair thin?

I'm a 28 year old male with a fro on top of my head and a mullet behind my neck. I've had strangers walk up to me and ask if it was real and then they would want to touch it. I've tried thinning and helps a little. The only way I can make it work is to wear a hat for at least an hour before I leave. I have short hair but the sides stick straight out. Are there any kinds of products I should? Please help me. My next move is shaving it off but I think this would be a lateral move considering I have 3 chins.PLEASE HELP!!!!
